Beehiiv

Creator-first newsletter platform with monetisation built in

Beehiiv is a newsletter platform built for creators who treat their publication as a business, bundling paid subscriptions, an ad network and referral tools into one product. The free plan covers 2,500 subscribers and paid plans start at $43 per month. It suits writers who want to monetise without assembling separate tools.

What Beehiiv is

Beehiiv was built by people who ran a large newsletter and got tired of paying for four products to do one job. That shows in what ships in the box: an ad network that matches sponsors to your publication, native paid subscriptions with no platform cut, a referral programme, and a recommendation network that trades subscribers with other publications.

The trade-off is that it is opinionated about what you are building. Beehiiv assumes your newsletter is the product. If your newsletter is a marketing channel for something else, a lot of what you pay for goes unused.

Pricing

The free Launch plan is genuinely usable, 2,500 subscribers with unlimited sends and a custom domain is more than most platforms give away. What it holds back is money: the ad network, paid subscriptions and automations all sit behind the Scale plan.

Above the free tier, pricing is flat rather than sliding: Scale and Max both cover up to 100,000 subscribers, so the cost per subscriber falls sharply as you grow. That is the opposite shape to most competitors and it is why Beehiiv gets cheaper, in relative terms, the bigger you get.

What it does well

  • Monetisation is native, not bolted on: sponsorships, paid tiers and referrals all live in the same dashboard as your posts
  • Takes 0% of paid subscription revenue, unlike Substack’s 10%
  • The recommendation network is a real growth channel, not a vanity feature
  • Flat subscriber ceilings mean predictable costs as you scale

Where it falls short

  • US-only hosting with an English-only admin, which rules it out for some European teams
  • The editor is competent but less pleasant than Substack’s or Ghost’s
  • Free plan withholds every monetisation feature, so you cannot test the main reason to be here without paying
  • As a general website builder it is weaker than Ghost or WordPress

Who Beehiiv is for

A good fit

Creators monetising a newsletter who want payments, referrals and sponsorships in one place instead of three.

  • A paid newsletter earning more than roughly $400 a month, where Substack's 10% already costs more than Beehiiv's flat fee
  • Publications selling sponsorships, since the ad network and the send tooling sit in the same dashboard
  • Writers who want referrals and cross-promotion without wiring up a third-party tool
  • Lists growing past 2,500 subscribers, where the cost stays flat all the way to 100,000

Not a fit

You need EU data residency, a non-English admin interface, or your project is really a blog with email attached.

Beehiiv FAQ

Is Beehiiv free?

Yes, the Launch plan is free up to 2,500 subscribers and includes unlimited sends, a custom domain, the recommendation network and API access. Monetisation features and automations start on the Scale plan at $43 per month.

How much does Beehiiv cost?

Scale is $43 per month and Max is $96 per month, both covering up to 100,000 subscribers, with annual billing cheaper. Above 100,000 subscribers you move to custom Enterprise pricing.

Can you export your subscriber list from Beehiiv?

Yes. Beehiiv exports subscribers to CSV with no waiting period and no plan restriction, so moving to another platform costs you the migration work but never the list itself.

Does Beehiiv host data in the EU?

No. Beehiiv hosts in the United States and offers a signable DPA with standard contractual clauses. That is usually enough for GDPR compliance but it is not EU data residency, so check with your own counsel if that matters.

Beehiiv or Substack?

Beehiiv charges a flat monthly fee and takes nothing from your subscription revenue, so it wins once you are earning. Substack costs nothing until you charge readers, then takes 10%, and brings its own discovery network.
