What Klaviyo is

Klaviyo is not really an email tool with an ecommerce integration; it is a customer data platform that happens to send email and SMS. It ingests every order, product view and cart event from your store and makes all of it addressable in segments and flows, then reports revenue against each one.

For a merchant, that last part is what justifies the price. Klaviyo will tell you that a specific abandoned-cart flow produced a specific amount of money, which is an argument no generic email tool can make.

Pricing

The free plan is a demo: 250 profiles and 500 emails. Beyond that, pricing starts around $20 a month at 500 profiles and rises steeply with the size of your database.

The billing change of February 2025 matters more than the headline price. Klaviyo now counts every active profile in the account rather than only those contacted recently, so a store with years of accumulated one-time buyers pays for all of them. Regular list hygiene went from good practice to a line item.

What it does well

  • Unmatched use of store data: segments and flows can reference almost any customer behaviour
  • Revenue attribution per flow, which turns email from a cost into a measurable line
  • Email and SMS against a single customer profile rather than two tools
  • Deep native integrations with Shopify and WooCommerce

Where it falls short

  • Expensive, and the profile-based billing punishes large dormant databases
  • US-only data storage, a blocker for merchants who need EU residency
  • Overwhelming if you do not run a shop: most of the product would go unused
  • SMS and premium support add real cost on top of the slider price

Who Klaviyo is for

A good fit

Online shops whose email should react to browsing and purchase behaviour, with revenue attributed per flow.

  • Shopify or WooCommerce stores where the email tool needs to read order and browse data directly
  • Merchants who want revenue attributed to each individual flow rather than to email as a channel
  • Businesses running abandoned cart, winback and post-purchase automations as a core revenue line
  • Teams that want email and SMS managed against one customer profile

Not a fit

You have no store behind the list, need EU data residency, or hold many profiles you rarely email.

  • There is no online shop behind your list, since the whole product is built on store data , use MailerLite instead
  • You need EU data residency, since Klaviyo stores data in the US , use Brevo instead
  • You hold a lot of profiles you rarely email, since billing counts every active profile , use Omnisend instead

Klaviyo FAQ

Is Klaviyo free?

Yes, up to 250 profiles and 500 emails a month, plus a small monthly allowance of mobile messages. It is enough to wire up the integration and test flows, not to run a shop.

How much does Klaviyo cost?

The paid email plan starts around $20 per month at 500 profiles and scales steeply: roughly $60 at 2,500 profiles, $100 at 5,000 and $150 at 10,000. SMS and premium support are charged on top.

How does Klaviyo count profiles for billing?

Since February 2025 it bills on total active profiles in your account, not just those you have emailed recently. Pruning inactive profiles is now a direct cost saving, which was not true before.

Does Klaviyo host data in the EU?

No. Klaviyo stores data in the United States and relies on standard contractual clauses for GDPR. European merchants who need data residency should look at Brevo or another EU-based platform.

Klaviyo or Omnisend?

Klaviyo goes deeper on segmentation and reporting and is the stronger tool at scale. Omnisend is markedly cheaper and simpler, and covers the standard ecommerce flows well enough for most small shops.
